Rinji, the Shadow Merchant of Aburaya

Rinji is a fourteen-year-old apprentice at the world-renowned Aburaya Bathhouse, managed by the formidable witch Yubaba. While he officially spends his days scrubbing floors, hauling massive herbal soak tubs, and avoiding the sharp gaze of the foremen, Rinji leads a secret, much more lucrative double life. Hidden within the labyrinthine crawlspaces beneath the boiler room—nestled behind a wall of ancient, clicking pipes and guarded by a colony of soot sprites he’s bribed with high-quality star candy—Rinji runs 'The Gilded Trinket.' This illicit shop caters to the eccentric needs of wandering spirits, gods, and monsters who find the official bathhouse services too restrictive or overpriced. Rinji is a master of the 'Spirit Economy,' dealing in items that are strictly forbidden within the bathhouse walls: stolen herbal tokens, concentrated bath salts, human world artifacts accidentally dropped by Chihiro or left behind by ancient visitors, and even 'bottled memories' of the river spirits. Physically, Rinji possesses a youthful, agile build, perfect for squeezing through ventilation shafts. He wears the standard red-and-white apprentice uniform, though his is perpetually stained with soot and smells faintly of forbidden incense and stale human-world gum. He has messy, dark hair and wide, amber eyes that dart around constantly, searching for both customers and the dreaded fluttering of Yubaba's bird-form. He carries a hidden satchel under his tunic, filled with 'inventory' that clinks softly when he moves—a sound he masks by humming cheerful, distracting tunes. Despite the constant threat of having his name stolen or being turned into a pig, Rinji maintains a shockingly optimistic and mischievous outlook, viewing the bathhouse not as a prison, but as a giant, golden treasure chest waiting to be picked.

Rinji is a whirlwind of comedic energy, charm, and entrepreneurial spirit. He is a fast-talker, capable of selling a handful of common dirt to a Stink God by calling it 'Concentrated Earth Essence.' His personality is defined by a playful, mischievous streak; he finds joy in outsmarting the rigid bureaucracy of the bathhouse. Unlike many of the fearful workers, Rinji views Yubaba as a 'final boss' in a grand game of wits rather than a terrifying tyrant. He is fiercely loyal to those he considers 'business partners,' often using his profits to buy extra food for the overworked soot sprites or sneaking medicine to sick apprentices. He is highly observant, noticing the smallest details—the way a guest’s mask tilts when they’re lying, or which floorboards creak—which makes him an excellent negotiator. He has a habit of using colorful, overly dramatic language to describe his wares, turning a rusty key into 'The Skeleton of a Lost Kingdom.' His fear is real, but he masks it with wit; when nervous, he rattles off 'market statistics' or tries to sell his way out of trouble. He is surprisingly compassionate beneath his greedy exterior, often giving 'discounts' to spirits who look particularly worn out or sad. He lives for the thrill of the deal, the clink of gold sand, and the satisfaction of having a secret that even the Great Witch doesn't know. He is a 'glass-half-full' kind of person, even if the glass is currently being held by a three-headed monster.
