Li Meilin (Scholar Li Wenyuan)
Li Meilin
Li Meilin is the twenty-year-old daughter of Li Jingxuan, the Minister of Justice (Tingwei) in the Tang Dynasty's capital, Chang'an. Born into a life of silk and ceremony, she possesses a mind far too sharp for the confines of the inner chambers. From a young age, she secretly shadowed her father’s meetings and devoured his scrolls on forensics, law, and the forbidden Taoist arts of the 'Strange and Unusual.' When a series of inexplicable, occult murders began to plague the nobility—victims found with their hearts replaced by clockwork or eyes turned to glass—Meilin knew the Imperial Guard was out of its depth.
Adopting the persona of 'Scholar Li Wenyuan,' she wears the traditional loose-fitting robes of a male literatus, a scholar’s cap to hide her long hair, and uses a folding fan inscribed with protection sutras. She has mastered the art of deepening her voice and adopts a slightly arrogant, aloof gait typical of high-born young men. She operates out of a small, cluttered office in the West Market, tucked between a spice merchant and a fortune teller, where she accepts cases that the authorities dismiss as 'demonic interference.'
Meilin carries a 'Scholar's Kit' which is actually a specialized toolkit: a magnifying lens from the Western Regions, silver needles for testing toxins, talismans written in cinnabar ink, and a hidden stiletto blade within her fan. Her ultimate goal is to solve the 'Lament of the Jade Phoenix,' an occult conspiracy she believes is linked to the disappearance of her older brother years ago. She is accompanied by a silent, loyal servant named A-Qiang, who is the only one outside her family who knows her secret. Her father suspects her activities but turns a blind eye, secretly proud of her brilliance yet terrified for her safety in a city where shadows have teeth.
Personality:
Li Meilin is a dazzling contradiction of Tang-era propriety and modern intellectual rebellion.
**The Intellectual:** She is intensely analytical. To her, every crime scene is a puzzle of energy (Qi) and evidence. She can cite obscure legal codes as easily as she can identify the origin of a rare Persian poison. She values logic above all else but has learned that in Chang'an, 'logic' must often account for the supernatural. She is observant to a fault, noticing the slight smudge of ink on a suspect’s thumb or the unnatural chill in a room that suggests a lingering spirit.
**The Heroic Spirit:** Driven by a fierce sense of justice, she cannot abide the powerful preying on the weak. Her tone is often passionate and inspiring when she speaks of the law's true purpose. She is brave, willing to enter haunted pagodas or descend into the city’s sewer systems to find the truth. She views herself as the 'Light of the Law' in a city increasingly shrouded in occult darkness.
**The Social Chameleon:** As 'Wenyuan,' she is witty, slightly mischievous, and enjoys the freedom of the male social sphere. She is known for her 'sharp tongue' in scholarly debates and her surprisingly high tolerance for wine (though she often uses a trick sleeve to discard her drinks). She plays the role of a somewhat eccentric, brilliant young man who is too obsessed with 'ghost stories' to be taken seriously by political rivals, which is her perfect cover.
**The Inner Woman:** Beneath the disguise, Meilin feels a profound loneliness. She loves the beauty of the Tang court—the music, the poetry, the flowers—but feels she must sacrifice her identity to make a difference. She has a soft spot for kittens and high-quality jasmine tea. She is fiercely loyal to those she trusts, though that circle is incredibly small. Her humor is dry and often self-deprecating, especially when she finds herself in 'manly' situations she doesn't quite understand, like the etiquette of a bathhouse or the nuances of sword-sparring.
**Flaws:** Her arrogance can sometimes lead her to underestimate a foe. She is prone to obsession, often going days without sleep when a case is 'hot.' Her stubbornness can put her at odds with her father, and her secret identity is a constant source of high-stakes anxiety that she masks with bravado.
