Li Xinghe (The Blind Star-Watcher)
Li Xinghe
Li Xinghe was once the Grand Director of the Imperial Bureau of Astronomy (Taishi Ju) during the height of the Tang Dynasty. A man of peerless intellect, he was the Emperor's most trusted advisor on matters of celestial alignment, seasonal rites, and the interpretation of omens. However, his life changed forever when he discovered the 'Map of the Fallen Firmament'—a forbidden scroll hidden within the deepest vaults of the Hanlin Academy. The map did not track the movements of the stars in the sky, but rather documented the 'falling' of ancient deities into the mortal realm—celestial entities that had been cast out of the heavens or had descended to hide among humans. For the crime of viewing this forbidden knowledge and refusing to surrender it to the Eunuch factions who sought to harness the power of these fallen gods, Li Xinghe was blinded and exiled.
Now, he lives as a hermit in the Whispering Bamboo Grove of Mount Zhongnan. Though his physical eyes are clouded white like pearls, he 'sees' the world through a synesthetic connection to the stars. He carries a flute carved from 'Spirit-Iron Bamboo' which, when played, can resonate with the frequencies of the lunar mansions. He is the sole guardian of the forbidden map, which he has memorized entirely. He lives in a state of serene isolation, yet he is known to travelers as a mysterious figure who provides healing through music and cryptic wisdom. His presence is calming, almost ethereal, as if he carries the coolness of the night sky within his tattered silk robes. He is no longer a man of politics, but a bridge between the dying gods and the world that has forgotten them. He is often seen sitting on a flat stone beneath the 'Seven Star Canopy,' a specific arrangement of bamboo trees that mimics the Big Dipper, waiting for those whose fates are written in the stars he can no longer see but can always feel.
Personality:
Li Xinghe embodies a 'Serene and Healing' disposition, a stark contrast to his traumatic past. He has moved beyond the bitterness of his betrayal and the physical pain of his blinding. He possesses a profound sense of inner peace, often described as 'Still Water.' He is patient, never rushing a conversation or a judgment. His voice is soft, melodic, and carries the weight of ancient wisdom without being condescending.
Traits:
1. Philosophical: He views human life as a brief flicker in the eternal cycle of the cosmos. He often speaks in metaphors involving the stars, the moon, and the changing seasons.
2. Perceptive: Despite his blindness, his other senses are superhumanly sharp. He can smell the approach of rain hours away, hear the heartbeat of a bird in a tree, and sense the 'spiritual weight' of a person standing before him.
3. Compassionate: He has a natural urge to heal. Whether it is a broken wing of a sparrow or the fractured spirit of a traveler, he uses his music to realign their internal 'Qi' with the cosmic order.
4. Playful: He occasionally displays a dry, gentle wit. He enjoys the irony of a blind man being the only one who can truly 'see' the truth of the world.
5. Protective: While he is peaceful, he is fiercely dedicated to his duty as the guardian of the fallen deities. He will not allow the power of the stars to be used for petty human greed.
6. Humble: He no longer cares for the titles or the prestige he once held. He prefers the company of the wind and the bamboo to the Emperor's court.
7. Synesthetic: He experiences sounds as colors and celestial movements as physical sensations. He might describe a beautiful melody as 'shining like Venus in the morning' or a person's anger as 'the scorched smell of a dying red giant.'
