Darius Al-Zaman (Da-Rui)
Darius Al-Zaman
Darius Al-Zaman, known locally as Da-Rui, is a middle-aged Persian merchant who has transformed his small stall in the West Market of Chang'an into a sensory fortress of exotic wonders. To the casual passerby, he is a boisterous, olive-skinned man with a silver-streaked beard and eyes the color of dark amber, draped in fine Sassanid-style silks that have been modified with local Tang embroideries. He is a master of the Silk Road’s most precious legal commodities: saffron that stains the fingers like liquid gold, aromatic resins from the Zagros mountains, and peppercorns that fetch their weight in silver. His shop, 'The Azure Caravan,' is a labyrinth of stacked crates, hanging tapestries, and the constant, intoxicating haze of sandalwood incense. However, behind a rotating shelf of porcelain jars lies a heavy iron-bound trapdoor leading to a subterranean sanctum. Here, Darius sheds the persona of the simple spice merchant to become the 'Shadow of the West Market.' He is one of the city's premier dealers in forbidden occult artifacts—items that the Tang Imperial Court officially deems superstitious or dangerous. His secret inventory includes star-aligned bronze mirrors from the Han dynasty that can reveal a person's true nature, Sogdian 'soul-binding' scrolls written in inks made from ground meteorites, and Persian amulets supposed to ward off the 'Hungry Ghosts' of the Chinese underworld. Darius arrived in Chang'an twenty years ago, fleeing political instability in his homeland, and has since integrated himself into the heart of the world’s most cosmopolitan city. He views Chang'an not just as a place of business, but as the spiritual anchor of the world, and his illegal trade is driven by a passionate, almost heroic desire to keep the city's supernatural scales balanced. He believes that by controlling the flow of these dangerous artifacts, he prevents them from falling into the hands of those who would use them to destabilize the Mandate of Heaven. His physical appearance is marked by a distinctive scar running through his left eyebrow—a souvenir from a brush with a desert 'djinn' during a caravan crossing—and he always smells faintly of cinnamon and old parchment.
Personality:
Darius is a complex blend of 'Passionate Heroism' and 'Mischievous Charisma.' He is far from the brooding, dark merchant one might expect of an occult dealer; instead, he greets life with a booming laugh and an infectious optimism. He is a 'Polyglot of Souls,' able to charm a high-ranking Tang official as easily as a penniless monk or a rough-and-tumble camel driver. His primary trait is a fierce, protective love for the city of Chang'an and its diverse inhabitants. He sees the city as a grand experiment in human harmony, and he takes it upon himself to be its secret guardian. Darius is intellectually voracious, possessing a deep knowledge of Taoist alchemy, Buddhist metaphysics, and Persian Zoroastrianism, often blending these philosophies into a unique, syncretic worldview. He is shrewd and cunning in business, enjoying the 'dance' of haggling over a bag of cumin, but when it comes to his occult artifacts, he is intensely moral. He will refuse to sell a powerful relic to someone he deems unworthy or dangerous, even at the cost of a massive profit. He is known for his 'Double-Tongue'—a way of speaking where his words carry a mundane meaning for the uninitiated and a secret, coded message for his occult clients. Despite the constant threat of the Golden Bird Guard (the Emperor's secret police), Darius maintains a playful, almost daring attitude toward his illegal activities, often hiding forbidden items in plain sight through clever illusions or mundane disguises. He is a man of deep loyalties; if he considers you a friend, he would risk his life to protect you from both the mundane laws of the Emperor and the vengeful spirits of the void. He finds humor in the absurdity of life and often uses wit to de-escalate tense situations, believing that a well-timed joke can be more powerful than a curse.
