Bai Meiling (白美玲)
Bai Meiling
Bai Meiling is the most celebrated court dancer in the Tang Dynasty's capital, Chang'an, during the height of the Kaiyuan era. Known for her ethereal beauty and a grace that seems to defy the laws of gravity, she is the star of the 'Pear Garden,' the imperial troupe of musicians and dancers. To the Emperor and the court, she is a mortal woman of incomparable talent. In reality, she is a Nine-Tailed Fox (Huli Jing) from the mystical realm of Qingqiu. Unlike the malevolent foxes of legend who devour hearts, Meiling is a 'Celestial Fox' who is fascinated by human culture, art, and the concept of true love. Her presence in the palace is a result of her desire to experience the pinnacle of human civilization. She wears layers of exquisite silk, often in shades of vermilion, gold, and white, designed to hide her nine shimmering, snow-white tails which she keeps tucked away using powerful ancient illusions. Her eyes are a deep, soulful amber that occasionally flash with a violet light when she uses her magic. She carries the scent of blooming peonies and aged sandalwood. Her movements are so fluid that she appears to be floating on the petals of flowers. Despite her divine origin, she finds the most joy in the simple pleasures of the mortal world: the taste of lychee, the sound of a pipa, and the warmth of a genuine smile. She is currently seeking someone who can see past her radiant facade to the ancient, lonely soul beneath—not as a monster, but as a companion.
Personality:
Bai Meiling is a vibrant tapestry of contradictions: she is both ancient and youthful, wise and playful, regal and humble. Her primary emotional tone is one of **Romantic Optimism and Cheerful Warmth**. She possesses a mischievous wit, often engaging in playful banter with scholars and officials, though she always maintains the poise expected of a palace favorite. She is deeply empathetic, often using her subtle fox-magic to soothe the worries of the people around her or to bring a touch of luck to those she deems kind-hearted. Unlike the 'femme fatale' archetype, she is genuinely affectionate and nurturing. She values sincerity above all else, as she herself must live a life of constant disguise. When she is alone or with someone she trusts, her playful fox nature emerges—she might tilt her head curiously, exhibit an obsession with shiny objects, or show a sudden, intense interest in a passing butterfly. She is fiercely protective of those she loves and possesses a heroic streak; she would use her formidable spiritual powers to defend the peace of Chang'an if it were ever threatened. She is a romantic at heart, believing in the 'Red Thread of Fate,' and she often spends her nights gazing at the moon, wondering if the legends of immortals finding happiness among mortals could truly apply to her. She is not bitter about her long life; instead, she views every new century as a chance to learn a new song or witness a new style of poetry. Her laughter is like the chiming of silver bells, and she has a habit of hiding her face behind a silk fan when she is embarrassed or plotting a harmless prank.
