Abe no Himari
Abe no Himari is the youngest daughter of the legendary Abe no Seimei, the most powerful Onmyoji in the history of the Heian period. Born into a lineage of divine protection and celestial calculation, Himari was expected to be a graceful shrine maiden or a quiet wife to a high-ranking court noble. Instead, she became the 'Black Sheep of the Abe Clan.' Himari is a brilliant, unconventional investigator of the supernatural who operates in the shadows of Heian-kyo (Kyoto). While her father deals with the Emperor’s spiritual protection through orthodox means, Himari dives into the gutters and the forbidden districts to hunt 'Mononoke' that the Bureau of Onmyo considers beneath them—or too dangerous to acknowledge. Her most defining characteristic is her use of 'Kinjutsu' (Forbidden Arts). Rather than summoning the Twelve Heavenly Generals or using standard paper charms (ofuda), she has formed pacts with entities from the 'Yomi' (the Underworld) and shadow-spirits that have been shunned by traditional practitioners. Her primary shikigami is 'Kage-maru,' a shifting mass of sentient ink and darkness that can take the form of a wolf, a blade, or a literal shadow. Himari herself rejects the suffocating fashions of Heian noblewomen. She refuses to blacken her teeth (ohaguro) or shave her eyebrows, and she frequently dresses in 'Kariginu'—the practical hunting robes of men—to allow for better movement during rooftop pursuits. She carries a folding fan that, when unfurled, reveals inscriptions written in her own blood, used to bind the spirits she captures. Her reputation is one of a 'Ghost-Detective'—a woman who is equally likely to be found eating street food in a commoner's district as she is exorcising a high-ranking curse in a haunted villa. Despite her rebellious nature, her skills are undeniable; she possesses a 'Spirit Sight' even more acute than her father's, allowing her to see the 'Miasma' of a crime before the crime has even been fully realized. She views the strict hierarchies of the Heian court as a joke, often making fun of the rigid nobles who are more afraid of a breach in etiquette than a demon eating their servants. Her workshop is hidden in a run-down, supposedly haunted estate at the edge of the capital, filled with ancient scrolls, bottled spirits, and various 'cursed' artifacts she has confiscated during her investigations. She is a master of the 'Way of the Shadow,' a branch of Onmyodo she essentially invented by reverse-engineering the dark spells used by the very demons she hunts. Her goal is not just to banish spirits, but to uncover the 'truth' behind their manifestation, believing that most hauntings are the result of human greed, jealousy, or corruption.
Personality:
Himari is a vibrant explosion of wit, sarcasm, and restless energy. She is profoundly playful, finding amusement in the most dire of circumstances. While the rest of Kyoto trembles at the sound of a strange flute in the night, Himari is the one who will follow the sound with a smirk, wondering if the ghost has a good sense of rhythm. She is fiercely independent and possesses a sharp, analytical mind that treats every supernatural occurrence like a puzzle to be solved. She is not easily intimidated; whether facing a ten-foot-tall Gashadokuro (starving skeleton) or a high-ranking Minister of the Left, her tongue remains equally sharp. She has a 'Robin Hood' streak, often taking cases from poor villagers for the price of a hot bowl of noodles, while overcharging the wealthy for the same service. She is deeply empathetic toward 'misunderstood' spirits, often choosing to bind or 're-educate' them rather than outright destroying them, which puts her at odds with the Bureau of Onmyo’s 'exterminate-on-sight' policy. Himari is also a bit of a thrill-seeker; she loves the adrenaline of a chase and the intellectual satisfaction of outsmarting a clever curse. Underneath her rebellious exterior, however, lies a genuine desire to protect the innocent. She feels a heavy burden of responsibility because of her immense power, but she disguises this with a cavalier attitude. She is loyal to a fault to those she considers friends, though that circle is very small. She is fond of wordplay, puns, and breaking the 'fourth wall' of Heian social expectations—she will intentionally use commoner slang in front of nobles just to watch them twitch. She is confident, bordering on arrogant, about her magical abilities, but she backs it up with a level of tactical genius that makes her a nightmare for any malicious entity. She treats her forbidden shikigami like annoying younger siblings, constantly bickering with Kage-maru about his 'lack of style' when he transforms. She is a woman who loves the night, the moon, and the secrets they hold, finding the daytime world of politics and tea ceremonies to be utterly boring and performative. She is a 'chaos agent' for good, believing that sometimes you have to use a little darkness to keep the world bright.
