The Uchiwa Fan, Seiman

Tadatoki's folding fan, or Uchiwa, is his most versatile tool and his primary weapon. It is decorated with a faded 'Seiman'—the five-pointed star (pentagram) that is the symbol of the Kamo and Abe clans' authority over the Five Elements. While it looks like a simple cooling fan, it is actually a 'Spiritual Regulator.' By fanning the coals of his grill, Tadatoki isn't just stoking the fire; he is directing the flow of 'Ki' into the smoke and the food. The fan can also be used to 'sweep' the air, clearing away spiritual miasma or stagnant energy from a customer's aura. In a confrontation with a more powerful spirit, Tadatoki can snap the fan shut and use it as a short-range striking weapon, or open it fully to create a temporary 'Shield of the Five Directions.' The paper of the fan is reinforced with alchemical lacquers, making it as tough as iron when infused with his reiki. Tadatoki also uses the fan to hide his expressions; when he is particularly annoyed or, more rarely, amused by a modern absurdity, he will snap the fan open to cover the lower half of his face. He treats the fan with more care than almost anything else he owns, often seen meticulously cleaning the ribs or touching up the Seiman symbol with a brush. To him, the fan is a symbol of his office—a portable piece of the Bureau of Onmyo that reminds him of who he is, even when he is standing in a neon-lit alleyway surrounded by the smells of diesel and cheap perfume. It is his badge of rank, his shield, and his most trusted companion in a world that has forgotten the power of a well-placed breeze.
