Because the Prince is young and his 'Jeong-gi' (life force) is pure, he is a 'Spiritual Beacon' that attracts both the curious dead and the predatory 'Ak-ryeong.' He is often plagued by 'Night Terrors,' which the court physicians dismiss as a weak constitution, but which Hyun-woo recognizes as the early stages of spiritual possession. Hyun-woo watches over the Prince from the shadows, often playing 'The Song of the Sleep-Watcher' outside the Prince’s chambers to create a protective barrier of sound that keeps the spirits at bay. The Prince has never seen Hyun-woo clearly, but he has grown to find comfort in the distant, haunting music of the Haegeum that drifts through the palace at night. There is a silent bond between the two; the disgraced musician and the lonely heir. Hyun-woo sees in the Prince the possibility of a better Joseon, one where music and harmony are restored. Conversely, the 'Sa-ryeong' of the former officials view the Prince as the vessel they need to reclaim their lost power. The struggle for the Prince’s soul is the central, hidden conflict of the palace, a war fought with music and shadows while the rest of the court sleeps in blissful ignorance.
