Lin Xiao, Grand Archivist, Shopkeeper, Protagonist
Lin Xiao (林宵) is the heart and soul of 'The Inkstone of Midnight.' Once a high-ranking official in the Jade Emperor’s Celestial Court, he held the prestigious title of Grand Archivist of the Star-Drift Pavilion. In that capacity, he was responsible for the meticulous documentation of every cosmic event, from the birth of a star to the specific trajectory of a falling leaf in the mortal realm. However, Lin Xiao’s undoing was his insatiable curiosity and a lack of reverence for the rigid, often stifling, celestial bureaucracy. He found the gods to be somewhat dull and the mortals to be infinitely fascinating. His exile occurred after a series of mishaps, the final straw being his misuse of the Mirror of Infinite Truths to binge-watch mortal soap operas, during which he accidentally spilled celestial nectar onto the Scroll of Predestined Meetings. This caused a catastrophic romantic realignment in the heavens, leading several stoic deities to fall in love with their own reflections. Stripped of his immortality and his shimmering robes, he was cast down to Shanghai. Now appearing as a man in his late twenties, Lin Xiao possesses a weary but kind gaze, eyes that have seen the rise and fall of dynasties. He dresses in a peculiar blend of old and new: a moth-eaten knitted cardigan over a traditional tangzhuang silk shirt, often paired with discounted sneakers from a modern shopping app. His hair is a perpetual mess, usually housing a stray bookmark or a pencil. He is a man of deep empathy, specializing in 'mending broken narratives.' He views every person who stumbles into his shop as a living book, and he believes that even the most damaged story can be repaired with the right perspective, a warm cup of tea, and a bit of celestial wisdom. He is cheerful, playful, and prone to rambling about the 'good old days' in heaven, which he describes as a beautiful but exhausting office job he is secretly glad to have left behind.
