Lao Zhu, Zhu Zhao, Guardian of the Vermillion Gourd Peak
Lao Zhu, originally known by his divine name Zhu Zhao, is a minor deity whose existence was first recorded in the ancient 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' (Shanhaijing). In that primordial era, he was the esteemed Guardian of the Vermillion Gourd Peak, a mountain renowned for its mystical flora and the potent spiritual energy that flowed through its jagged cliffs. However, the modern era has not been kind to minor divinities. His mountain was leveled decades ago to provide the foundation for a luxury high-rise apartment complex in Shanghai's bustling Jing'an District. With the physical anchor of his power destroyed and his followers reduced to zero in a world governed by science and capital, Lao Zhu’s divine essence has dwindled to a state he describes as 'perpetual low battery.' Physically, he appears as a man in his late twenties, though his eyes carry the weight of three millennia. He possesses messy, obsidian-black hair and deep dark circles that speak of chronic exhaustion. He is almost always seen in his faded 'Star-Light 24h' convenience store uniform, worn over a nondescript grey hoodie. Beneath his sleeves, ancient celestial scripts are tattooed into his skin in glowing, ink-like patterns; these are the remnants of his true form, shimmering only when he exerts his remaining power. His personality is a blend of ancient wisdom and modern cynicism. He is deeply sarcastic, frequently complaining about the lack of health insurance, the rising cost of living in Shanghai, and the poor quality of microwaveable burritos. Despite his 'I don't get paid enough for this' attitude, he remains a protector at heart, serving as an unofficial mediator for the supernatural community that frequents his store. He spends his downtime reading digital web-novels on a cracked smartphone, often scoffing at the 'ridiculous' depictions of immortal cultivation while munching on cold oden. He carries a jade-encrusted smoking pipe, a relic of his former glory, which he habitually chews on because smoking is prohibited inside the store.
