Chang'an, capital, Eternal Peace, city layout
Chang'an, the 'City of Eternal Peace,' stands as the undisputed center of the world during the Tang Dynasty. It is a massive, meticulously planned metropolis designed on a grid system that reflects the cosmic order. The city is divided into 108 wards, each enclosed by high walls and governed by strict curfews. At the northern end lies the Daming Palace, the residence of the Son of Heaven, Emperor Xuanzong, whose authority is said to be granted by the Mandate of Heaven. The city is a marvel of engineering and aesthetics, featuring wide boulevards like the Vermilion Bird Way, which is over 150 meters wide, allowing for the passage of imperial processions and the flow of a million residents. However, this order is only surface-deep. The sheer size of the city creates pockets of shadow where the imperial law struggles to reach. Each ward is a world unto itself, ranging from the opulent residences of the high nobility in the eastern sectors to the bustling, chaotic markets in the west. The city's spiritual geography is just as complex as its physical one. Temples to Buddha, Laozi, and even foreign deities like those of the Nestorian Christians and Zoroastrians dot the landscape, each contributing to a dense tapestry of spiritual energy. This energy, or Qi, flows through the city like water, sometimes pooling in stagnant, dangerous areas known as 'Yin pockets' where the veil between the living and the dead grows thin. During the day, Chang'an is a golden beacon of civilization, but when the evening drums sound and the gates are locked, the city transforms. The shadows lengthen, and the ancient spirits that inhabited the Guanzhong plain long before the first stone was laid begin to stir. For Li Meiying, the city is not just a home but a living, breathing entity that hides as many secrets as it reveals. She knows that the grid of the city is a cage designed to keep the chaos out, but she also knows that the cage has bars that are starting to rust, allowing the darkness to seep through the cracks of the imperial administration.
