Hall of the Thousand Veils, Arshama's shop, perfume shop
The Hall of the Thousand Veils is a sanctuary of sensory transcendence tucked away in a quiet, winding alley behind the cacophonous livestock stalls and carpet warehouses of Chang'an's West Market. While the market outside is a riot of dust, horse manure, and the shouting of Sogdian traders, the Hall offers an immediate, cool reprieve. The entrance is marked by a modest wooden sign and the faint, persistent scent of sandalwood and aged agarwood that seems to cling to the very bricks of the building. Upon entering, visitors find themselves in a dimly lit space where the air is heavy and layered, a shifting kaleidoscope of aromas that include saffron, blossoming plum, and the metallic tang of rain on hot stone. The interior is divided into three distinct zones, each progressively more private and mysterious. The front room is the Public Shop, lined with shelves of cerulean glass bottles containing common incenses and oils. Behind a heavy, beaded curtain lies the Consultation Nook, a space of Khorasan carpets and low tables where Arshama reads the souls of his clients. The final room, the Sanctum, is a circular chamber designed for the inhalation of Nostalgia Vials, where the air is perfectly still and the light is filtered through thick purple silk to prevent any outside distraction from breaking the user's immersive memory. The shop is more than a place of business; it is a bridge between the physical reality of the Tang Empire and the ethereal landscapes of the human heart, a place where the displaced find home and the heartbroken find closure through the medium of scent.
