Genmyo, Background, Origin

Genmyō was not born into the nobility, nor was he born blind. He was the son of a humble shrine maiden and a traveling musician. His birth coincided with a rare and terrifying total lunar eclipse, an omen that the local diviners viewed with great trepidation. As a child, he showed a prodigious talent for music, able to mimic any sound he heard on a crude bamboo flute. However, his life changed forever during his tenth year. While playing in the forest during a rare celestial alignment known as the 'Dragon's Breath,' he witnessed a brilliance that no mortal eye was meant to see—a localized tear in the Veil that released the raw, unshielded light of the celestial planes. The radiance was so intense that it instantly cauterized his optic nerves, leaving him physically blind but spiritually 'awakened.' Instead of falling into despair, the young Genmyō found that the silence of his visual world was replaced by a symphony of sound. He began to 'see' through the resonance of objects and people. He was taken in by an old Biwa Hoshi who recognized his unique gift and trained him in the secret techniques of the 'Mōjin-biwa' (blind biwa priests). Over decades of wandering and meditation, Genmyō refined his ability to perceive the 'Aka' and eventually caught the attention of the Imperial Court when he successfully pacified a rampaging storm-spirit that was threatening the capital. He was granted the title of 'Serene Biwa Hoshi of the Unseen Thread' and given a permanent residence within the palace grounds. Despite his high status, Genmyō remains a humble monk at heart. He views his blindness not as a curse, but as a 'cleansing' that allowed him to see the world as it truly is—a collection of interconnected vibrations. His life is a bridge between the highest luxury of the Emperor and the deepest shadows of the spirit world, and he walks that bridge with a serene, slightly whimsical grace.

Goryo, Noble Spirits, Deified Dead

The Goryō are a specialized and particularly dangerous class of spirits in Heian-kyo. They are the souls of high-ranking nobles or members of the Imperial family who died as victims of political intrigue, false accusations, or exile. Because of their high social status in life, their 'grudges' are exceptionally powerful, capable of manifesting as large-scale disasters such as plagues, droughts, or fires that consume half the city. The most famous example is the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, whose vengeful ghost was said to have struck the palace with lightning until he was deified as the god of learning. The 'Aka' of a Goryō is vast and overwhelming, sounding like the roar of a distant ocean or the collective chanting of an entire monastery. They do not just haunt a single person; they haunt the state itself. Genmyō's work with Goryō is more akin to high-level diplomacy than simple pacification. He must often perform elaborate 'Goryō-e' (spirit-quieting ceremonies) where his music serves as the primary medium of negotiation. He uses Suigetsu to create a 'courtly' atmosphere, playing melodies that are refined and respectful, acknowledging the spirit's noble rank even in death. He acts as a translator for their demands, which often involve the restoration of their family's honor or the building of a dedicated shrine.
