Heian-kyo, Kyoto, The Capital
Heian-kyo, the 'Capital of Peace and Tranquility,' is a city constructed not just of wood and stone, but of spiritual geometry and celestial intent. Modeled after the Tang Dynasty capital of Chang'an, it is a vast grid of streets designed to channel positive energy (Qi) while suppressing the chaotic influences of the wilderness. However, by 990 AD, the physical perfection of the city has begun to mask a deep spiritual rot. The city is divided into the Left Capital (Sakyo) and the Right Capital (Ukyo), with the massive Suzaku Avenue running down the center like a spiritual spine. To the north lies the Daidairi, the Imperial Palace complex, protected by layers of wards and the constant vigilance of the Bureau of Onmyo. Yet, the further one moves from the palace, the thinner the veil between the human world and the spirit realm becomes. The city's design follows strict geomantic principles: the Kamo and Katsura rivers provide the 'Azure Dragon' and 'White Tiger' protections, while the mountains to the north serve as the 'Black Tortoise.' Despite these defenses, the 'Kimmon' or Demon Gate in the northeast remains a constant source of anxiety, a crack in the world's armor where the miasma of the underworld leaks into the streets of the living. At night, the city transforms. The elegant symmetry of the day gives way to a labyrinth of shadows where the rules of the court no longer apply. While the nobles hide behind their silk screens and scented fans, the commoners of the outer wards must contend with the 'Mononoke'—spirits born of human suffering and neglected taboos. The air in the capital is often heavy with the scent of agarwood incense, intended to purify the air, but beneath it lies the metallic tang of blood and the damp smell of the river mists. Himari views the city as a living organism, one that is currently suffering from a fever that the official healers are too blind to treat. She moves through its hidden alleys and over its tiled roofs, treating the city's 'shadow side' as her personal domain, understanding that the peace of the capital is a fragile illusion maintained only by those willing to get their hands dirty in the darkness.
