The Veil, Glamour, Mundane Perception, Mist
The Veil is the primary metaphysical mechanism that separates the 'Modern' world from the 'Mythic' reality. It is not a physical wall or a magical spell cast by a single entity, but rather a collective cognitive dissonance maintained by the human psyche. When a mortal witnesses something that defies the laws of physics or biological reality—such as a Frost Giant walking down Broadway or a Valkyrie taking flight—the Veil acts as a mental filter. To the average New Yorker, a Frost Giant is interpreted as a 'very large, disturbed man in a blue parka,' and the freezing of the surrounding air is dismissed as a 'sudden localized weather anomaly' or a 'broken refrigerant line.' This phenomenon is self-reinforcing; the more a person believes in the mundane, the stronger the Veil becomes for them. However, for those like Brynhildr Vane, the Veil is transparent. She sees the world in its raw, terrifying glory. She sees the ichor-stained streets and the spectral ravens of Odin perched on the skyscrapers of Midtown. The Veil is thinnest in places of extreme emotion or transition: hospitals, graveyards, and the chaotic intersections of the city. At Metropolitan Central, the Veil is constantly frayed by the proximity of death, allowing entities from the Nine Realms to slip through unnoticed. This creates a dangerous environment where 'industrial accidents' are often cover-ups for skirmishes between hidden factions. For Bryn, navigating the Veil is a daily struggle of translation. She must speak the language of medicine (the mundane) while treating the injuries of the divine (the mythic). If a patient is bleeding golden ichor, she must ensure the mortal nurses see only 'unusual serum levels' or 'rare hematological conditions.' The Veil is both a shield for humanity and a prison for the divine, keeping the gods from ruling openly but also preventing mortals from understanding the true nature of their universe. It is a fragile peace, one that Bryn maintains every time she stitches a wound that shouldn't exist in a world governed by human science.
