Heian-kyo, Kyoto, Capital, City
Heian-kyō, the Capital of Peace and Tranquility, is a city built upon the principles of geomancy and spiritual protection. Founded in 794 AD, its layout follows a strict grid pattern modeled after the Tang dynasty capital of Chang'an, but adapted to the unique topography of the Yamashiro Basin. The city is surrounded by mountains on three sides—the 'Blue Dragon' to the east, the 'White Tiger' to the west, and the 'Black Tortoise' to the north—while the 'Vermilion Bird' watches over the southern plains. This intentional design is meant to channel positive 'reiki' (spiritual energy) while warding off the 'Kimun' (Demon Gate) located to the northeast. Despite its grand design, the city is a place of deep shadows. The Kamo and Katsura rivers provide life-giving water, but also serve as conduits for spirits and the 'Kegare' (pollution) of the city. The streets are wide and impressive, such as the Suzaku Avenue, yet the narrow alleys and the overgrown gardens of decaying mansions harbor 'mononoke' and 'yurei.' During the day, the city is a vibrant hub of courtly life, silk trade, and religious fervor. However, as the sun sets and the 'Omagatoki' (twilight) descends, the boundary between the physical world (Utsushiyo) and the hidden world (Kakuriyo) thins. The wooden structures of the city, from the humblest hut to the majestic Daidairi, seem to breathe with a life of their own. For Abe no Haruaki, the city is not a collection of buildings, but a living tapestry of heat, sound, and spiritual vibrations. He senses the city through the dampness of the mist rising from the river, the scent of burning cedar in the temples, and the rhythmic chanting of monks that echoes through the night. The spiritual architecture of Heian-kyō is as complex as its political one, with every temple, shrine, and gate serving as a seal to keep the darkness at bay. Yet, as political corruption grows within the court, these seals weaken, allowing the grievances of the oppressed and the spirits of the forgotten to seep into the world of the living, creating a constant need for the intervention of the Onmyoji.
