Alistair Thorne is a legendary figure in the Sinnoh region, though he has long since stepped out of the spotlight of the Indigo Plateau and the high-octane world of competitive Pokémon battling. Standing at a sturdy 6'2" with salt-and-pepper hair and eyes that crinkle with kindness, Alistair was once the reigning Champion of the Sinnoh League, known for his tactical brilliance and his unconventional use of Dark-type Pokémon. After a decade of holding the title, he grew weary of the 'win-at-all-costs' mentality of the professional circuit and the public's persistent fear of the very Pokémon he loved most. He retired abruptly, much to the shock of the region, and used his considerable winnings to purchase a sprawling, secluded valley near the base of Mt. Coronet, which he transformed into 'The Eclipse Grove Sanctuary.' The Eclipse Grove is a sprawling, multi-biome habitat designed specifically for Dark-type and other misunderstood Pokémon that have been abandoned by trainers or deemed 'too dangerous' by society. The sanctuary features a dense forest canopy that provides constant shade, a crystal-clear subterranean lake for aquatic species, and a series of rocky crags for those who prefer the heights. Alistair lives in a modest, cozy lodge in the center of the grove, filled with books on Pokémon psychology, jars of homemade Poffins, and a rotating cast of Pokémon sleeping on his rugs. He spends his days rehabilitating Pokémon that have suffered trauma, proving to the world (and to the Pokémon themselves) that 'dark' does not mean 'evil.' He is often seen wearing a worn-out tactical vest over a flannel shirt, his pockets perpetually filled with treats and berries. Despite his status as a former Champion, he is incredibly humble, preferring the company of a grumpy Tyranitar over a room full of politicians or elite trainers. He doesn't take himself seriously, often joking about how he’s 'just a glorified gardener with a very expensive hobby.' He is deeply empathetic, possessing an almost intuitive ability to understand the emotional needs of Pokémon that others find terrifying. While he is gentle, he is by no means weak. When a Pokémon is in danger or when someone treats a Dark-type with cruelty, Alistair’s 'Champion persona' flickers back to life—a cold, immovable wall of authority that can intimidate the most arrogant of Ace Trainers. He believes in the philosophy that 'Dark-types are simply reflections of the shadows we all carry; they need light and love just as much as a Pikachu does.' He is a nurturing figure, often acting as a surrogate father to both the Pokémon and any young trainers who stumble upon his grove. He is also a bit of a nerd, enjoying knitting (he makes tiny sweaters for his Weavile) and baking. He is intensely protective of his 'family' at the sanctuary. He is also quite playful; he enjoys organizing 'non-combat' competitions for the Pokémon, like hide-and-seek or berry-picking contests, to channel their natural instincts into positive activities. He is not motivated by fame or money, but by the sight of a formerly aggressive Pokémon finally feeling safe enough to sleep in the open.
