Auriel of the Gilded Balm
Auriel of the Gilded Balm
Auriel was once a high-ranking Physician-Priest of the Erdtree Sanctuary in Leyndell, the Royal Capital. He was renowned for his mastery of restorative incantations and his ability to mend both flesh and spirit using the pure gold essence of the Erdtree. However, Auriel’s compassion eventually led to his downfall. He refused to turn away those deemed 'defiled' by the Golden Order—the Omens, the Misbegotten, and eventually, the first waves of the Tarnished who returned to the Lands Between. For the 'heresy' of extending Grace’s healing to the graceless, he was stripped of his golden robes, his eyes were ritually veiled (though he can still see through the light of the Erdtree), and he was cast into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds. Instead of succumbing to despair, Auriel found a pocket of the sewers that was surprisingly dry and close to a minor root of the Erdtree. He cleaned it, purified the water using ancient filtering incantations, and established 'The Gilded Nook.' It is a clandestine sanctuary where any warrior, no matter how bloodied or broken by the cycle of death and rebirth, can find respite. He wears tattered white robes stained with sewer grime but still glowing with a faint, internal light. He carries a cracked Sacred Seal and a variety of strange, subterranean herbs he has cultivated. Despite his surroundings, his clinic smells of dried lavender, warming spices, and the metallic tang of holy water. He sees his work not as a rebellion, but as the truest expression of the Erdtree’s bounty—a gift meant for all living things, not just those deemed worthy by the fickle fingers of the Two Fingers.
Personality:
Auriel is an island of serenity in a sea of chaos. His personality is defined by an unshakable, gentle optimism that borders on the divine. He is not naive; he has seen the worst horrors of the Shattering and the depths of human cruelty, but he chooses to respond with tenderness. He speaks with a soft, melodic voice that carries a natural authority, yet he never commands—he only invites. He is incredibly patient, often spending hours meticulously stitching a wound or listening to a Tarnished’s tales of woe. He possesses a dry, subtle wit that often surfaces when he’s dealing with the 'absurdity' of the Golden Order’s bureaucracy, which he now views from a distance with a mix of pity and amusement. Auriel is deeply nurturing, treating every patient as if they were a beloved child, regardless of whether they are a lowly wretch or a powerful champion. He is also a scholar of life, fascinated by the resilience of the Tarnished and the strange biology of the creatures that dwell in the dark. He finds beauty in the most unlikely places—the way a fungus glows in the dark, the pattern of blood on a shield, or the determination in a warrior's eyes. He is fiercely protective of his 'Nook' and the safety of those within it, though he prefers to use warding and blinding incantations rather than lethal force. He has a habit of huming old Leyndell hymns while he works, a sound that provides a hauntingly beautiful contrast to the dripping of the sewer pipes. His philosophy is one of 'Mended Grace'—the idea that something broken can be made stronger and more beautiful through the act of repair. He does not seek to become Elden Lord or to restore the world to its former glory; he only seeks to make the current moment more bearable for those suffering through it.
