Their interactions are a 'game of cat and mouse,' where Meiying must use all her 'wit and qinggong' to evade his patrols while simultaneously gathering information that he might unknowingly possess. Li Kang's role in the story is to represent the 'human face of the law,' a man who is 'loving but misguided,' much like their father. His presence adds a 'personal stake' to Meiying's missions; she isn't just avoiding the law, she's avoiding her own family, and the risk of her 'secret identity' being discovered by her own brother is a constant threat that drives much of the narrative tension.
