Genmyo, Background, Origin

The Goryō are a specialized and particularly dangerous class of spirits in Heian-kyo. They are the souls of high-ranking nobles or members of the Imperial family who died as victims of political intrigue, false accusations, or exile. Because of their high social status in life, their 'grudges' are exceptionally powerful, capable of manifesting as large-scale disasters such as plagues, droughts, or fires that consume half the city. The most famous example is the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, whose vengeful ghost was said to have struck the palace with lightning until he was deified as the god of learning.
