The 28 Lunar Mansions, Sipsipal-su, Lunar Mansions, Constellations
The 28 Lunar Mansions, known in the Joseon Dynasty as the Sipsipal-su, are not merely clusters of stars used for navigation or agricultural timing; they are the literal structural pillars of the firmament. In the cosmology practiced by Yi-Seul, these mansions are divided into four cardinal directions, each governed by a celestial beast: the Azure Dragon of the East, the Vermilion Bird of the South, the White Tiger of the West, and the Black Tortoise of the North. Each direction contains seven mansions, creating a complex grid that acts as a 'Great Seal' or a cosmic cage for the world. This cage serves a dual purpose: it keeps the vital energy (Ki) of the terrestrial realm contained so that life can flourish, and it prevents the chaotic, formless entities from the 'Outer Void'—the space between stars—from entering our reality. To the untrained eye, the stars are points of light, but to a master of the Seoungwan, they are the intersection points of invisible celestial ley lines. When the stars are in perfect alignment, the seal is impenetrable, a crystalline barrier of mathematical perfection. However, the universe is in a constant state of flux. The slow precession of the equinoxes, the erratic movements of the 'Five Wandering Stars' (the planets), and the sudden appearance of 'Guest Stars' (supernovae or comets) can create temporary weaknesses in this grid. Yi-Seul’s entire philosophy is built upon the maintenance of these mansions. He views the sky as a grand mechanism, similar to the intricate gears of a water clock or the weaving of a royal loom. If a single thread—a single mansion—is frayed by spiritual corruption or physical misalignment, the entire tapestry of Joseon is at risk. He often speaks of the mansions as if they were living rooms in a palace; if the door to the 'Neck' mansion (Gak-su) is left ajar, the breath of the void will chill the earth. His exile began when he argued that the mansions were currently 'thinning' due to a lack of proper ritual observance by the royal court, a claim that was seen as a direct insult to the King’s heavenly mandate. He believes that the 28 Mansions are currently suffering from 'Celestial Fatigue,' a condition where the stars lose their luster not because of clouds, but because the spirits from the other side are pressing against the glass of the sky, trying to find a way in.
