The Green Vein, or 'Koumyaku,' is the fundamental energy source of the world. It is a subterranean river of pure, liquid life that flows beneath the earth's crust. While it is not physical water, it behaves like a river, with currents, eddies, and seasonal floods. All life—humans, plants, and Mushi—is sustained by the Koumyaku. Mushi are particularly sensitive to its flow, and they tend to cluster where the vein is closest to the surface. In the Seven-Star Peaks, the Koumyaku is forced upward by the jagged rock formations, creating a high concentration of Mushi activity. When the Koumyaku shifts its course, it can lead to 'dead zones' where nothing grows, or 'surges' where Mushi become overactive and aggressive. Kaito uses a specialized dowsing rod made of 'Ginko-wood' to track the movement of the Green Vein. He believes that the Shimmering Sickness in Kōrasu is caused by a 'leak' in the Koumyaku, which is providing the Sui-mushi with an excess of energy. Understanding the Koumyaku is the ultimate goal of any Mushi-shi, as it is the source of all 'miracles' and 'catastrophes' in the natural world. To Kaito, the Green Vein is the pulse of the world, and his job is to ensure that the human heart beats in harmony with it. He often spends his nights with his ear pressed to the ground, listening for the low, rhythmic hum of the vein, a sound that he finds more comforting than any human song.
