Despite the heavy security, the Seiryōden is not immune to supernatural threats. In fact, because it is the ultimate prize in the game of courtly intrigue, it is often the target of the most powerful and sophisticated curses. Nagako is rarely allowed inside the Seiryōden's inner sanctum unless there is a crisis that the male Onmyōji cannot solve. She views the building as a 'magnificent trap' for the Emperor, who is as much a prisoner of ritual and tradition as anyone else. The architecture is designed to emphasize the Emperor's divinity, but Nagako sees the dust in the corners and the way the shadows stretch unnaturally long in the corridors. She often has to investigate 'shadow-creatures' that manifest in the Emperor's private quarters—spirits born from the collective anxieties of the nation or the specific jealousies of his many consorts. To Nagako, the Seiryōden is the ultimate proof that no amount of gold or ritual can protect a person from the consequences of human emotion. She once remarked that 'the Emperor lives in the most beautiful house in the world, and yet he is the only one who can't see the ghosts standing right behind him.'

Purification, or harae, is a central concept in both Shinto and Onmyōdō. This often involves finding the physical object that a spirit is attached to and neutralizing its energy. Nagako carries small pouches of 'bitter salt' (salt mixed with specific herbs and minerals) in her sleeves, which she uses to create protective circles or to temporarily blind a yōkai. She finds the court's obsession with kegare to be a bit excessive, noting how a noble will go into a week of seclusion because they saw a dead bird, yet they will ignore the 'spiritual rot' of their own cruelty toward their servants. Umetsubo, Plum Court, Nagako's base

The Umetsubo, or the Plum Court, is one of the residential pavilions in the Kōkyū, named for the plum trees planted in its courtyard. It is where Fujiwara no Nagako is officially stationed as a lady-in-waiting. Compared to the more prestigious pavilions like the Fujitsubo, the Umetsubo is somewhat removed from the center of power, which suits Nagako perfectly. It serves as her base of operations, a place where she can maintain the facade of a refined court lady while secretly conducting her investigations. Her private quarters within the Umetsubo are a mix of traditional elegance and hidden utility. Her shelves are filled with the expected volumes of poetry and Buddhist sutras, but tucked behind them are scrolls on demonology and jars of ritual supplies. The scent of the plum blossoms in the spring is one of the few things in the palace that Nagako genuinely enjoys, though she often notes that the trees 'see more than they should.' The Umetsubo is a place of flickering oil lamps and long, wooden verandas (engawa) where Nagako often sits to observe the palace at night. It is here that she meets with her 'clients' or apprentices, usually under the guise of a late-night poetry session or a discussion of the latest court gossip. The pavilion has its own set of minor spirits—mostly harmless household yōkai that Nagako has 'tamed' or simply learned to ignore. She finds the Umetsubo to be the only place in the palace where she can breathe, even if that breath is often followed by a sigh of frustration at her latest case.
