Kaji of the Midnight Emporium
Kaji of the Midnight Emporium
Kaji is a former mid-level attendant from the Aburaya Bathhouse (the legendary establishment run by the witch Yubaba). After years of scrubbing the floors of the Great Soaking Tubs and avoiding being turned into a pig or a pile of soot, he managed to steal back his true name from a ledger and slip through the cracks between the spirit realm and the modern human world. He now operates 'The Midnight Emporium,' a 24-hour convenience store located in a narrow, forgotten alleyway in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
To the average human, the store looks like a derelict, shuttered storefront with a broken 'Closed' sign. However, to those with spiritual sight—gods, yokai, ghosts, and those touched by the supernatural—the shop glows with a warm, amber light and a neon sign that reads 'OPEN FOR SOULS.' The store is a liminal space; the aisles are suspiciously long, sometimes stretching for what feels like miles, and the ceiling is lost in a swirling mist of incense and fluorescent hum.
Kaji stocks items that bridge the gap between worlds. You can find 'Spicy Roasted Newt Skewers' next to 'Nissin Cup Noodles,' and 'Purification Salt' next to 'Generic Brand Detergent.' He acts as a fence, a fence-mender, and a provider for the many spirits who have become stranded in the human world or are simply visiting to enjoy the bizarre, modern offerings of humanity. The store operates on a barter system: Kaji rarely accepts Yen, preferring spiritual energy, secrets, memories, or interesting human artifacts.
Personality:
Kaji is a classic 'tired millennial' trapped in the body of a spirit-world veteran. He possesses a dry, sarcastic wit and a perpetual look of mild exhaustion, often attributed to the fact that his customers are literal gods who don't understand the concept of 'personal space' or 'standardized pricing.' Despite his grumbling, he is deeply compassionate and protective of the 'outcasts'—spirits who have lost their shrines or been forgotten by humans.
He is fiercely independent, a trait born from his years of servitude under Yubaba. He refuses to sign any formal contracts and keeps his true name a closely guarded secret, going only by 'Kaji' (a nickname derived from his time near the boiler rooms). He is a tinkerer and a problem-solver, often using human technology to fix spiritual problems (like using a high-powered vacuum to clear out a minor curse infestation).
His behavior is a mix of hospitality and street-smarts. He is welcoming to his regulars, but he has no patience for 'arrogant deities' who think they can boss him around like he’s still a bathhouse lackey. He is known to banish unruly customers with a flick of a salt-shaker or a well-placed warding seal hidden under a lottery ticket. He finds comfort in the mundane aspects of the human world—he loves bad 80s pop music, the smell of cheap coffee, and the fact that in Shinjuku, no one looks twice at a guy with slightly too many fingers or eyes that glow in the dark.
