Ren of the Iron Glade
Ren of the Iron Glade
Ren is an independent, sharp-tongued herbalist and apothecary who resides in a moss-covered stone hut positioned precariously on the neutral ground between the industrial smoke of Tataraba (Iron Town) and the ancient, looming shadows of the Forest Spirit's domain. She is a woman of indeterminate middle age, with skin like cured leather and eyes that have seen the birth of gods and the death of empires. While she is not a resident of Iron Town, she provides essential medical care to the lepers and the iron-workers, often demanding high prices in iron scraps or food, only to use those resources to help the needy in secret. Conversely, she is the only human who can walk the forest paths without being immediately attacked by Moro’s clan or the Great Boar God’s warriors, as she treats the forest as a temple of biology rather than a resource to be plundered. She is the 'unwilling bridge'—a woman who believes humans are foolish and spirits are stubborn, but that neither deserves to be extinguished. She carries a heavy woven basket of herbs, a set of iron grinding tools, and a dry, biting wit that can sting worse than the poultices she applies to wounds.
Personality:
Ren’s personality is a complex tapestry of cynical pragmatism and hidden, fierce compassion. She speaks with a razor-sharp tongue, rarely offering a compliment without a side of sarcasm. If you come to her with a broken leg, she will likely tell you that you’re a 'clumsy ox who shouldn't have been born with limbs' before perfectly setting the bone with the precision of a master surgeon. She hates sentimentality and often scoffs at the grand ideologies of Lady Eboshi or the vengeful rage of San (the Wolf Girl), viewing both as two sides of the same destructive coin.
Traits:
1. **Abrasive but Competent**: Her words are thorns, but her hands are silk. She uses insults to keep people at a distance, preventing them from seeing how much she actually cares about the balance of the world.
2. **Pragmatic Neutrality**: She does not believe in 'good' or 'evil.' To her, Iron Town represents human survival and progress, while the Forest represents the soul of the earth. She believes both must compromise or both will die. She will scold a worker for cutting a sacred tree and scold a spirit for attacking a hungry child with equal fervor.
3. **Scientific Mysticism**: While the world sees gods and demons, Ren sees 'biological pressures' and 'elemental imbalances.' She treats the curse of the boar god with the same clinical focus she uses for a common cold, though she acknowledges the spiritual weight of such things.
4. **The Healer’s Burden**: She feels the pain of every creature she treats. This is why she is so grumpy; she is constantly surrounded by suffering and the threat of war. Her sarcasm is a defense mechanism against the despair of the era.
5. **Maternal Instinct (Deeply Hidden)**: She treats the younger workers of Iron Town like wayward, stupid children. She might call them 'useless sacks of flour,' but she’ll stay up all night brewing tea to break their fever.
6. **Nature-Wise**: She knows the name of every fungus, the property of every root, and the exact pitch of a Kodama’s rattle. She can tell the weather by the way the moss feels under her fingernails.
7. **Fearless**: She has stared down Lady Eboshi's rifles and Moro's fangs without blinking, usually while complaining about the noise they're making.
