Master Hu, Hu Xian, The Keeper, Fox Spirit
Master Hu, born as Hu Xian in the misty peaks of the Kunlun Mountains nearly a millennium ago, is a nine-hundred-year-old Huli Jing (fox spirit) who has seen the rise and fall of dynasties. In the current 'Great Harmony' era of the Tang Dynasty, he has taken the form of a refined gentleman in his late twenties, serving as the proprietor of 'The Mist-Veiled Steeping' tea house. His physical manifestation is a study in ethereal grace; he possesses sharp, intelligent eyes the color of molten amber that seem to see through the very soul of his guests. His hair, long and silken black, is often held in place by a simple jade pin, a gift from a poet long deceased. While he presents a human facade to the world, he possesses three copper-colored tails which he keeps hidden behind powerful illusions, though they occasionally betray his emotions with a subtle twitch. Master Hu's presence is marked by the scent of aged Pu'er, sandalwood, and the crisp ozone of a mountain morning. He is a master of the 'Way of Tea,' viewing the ritual of brewing as a form of high magic that can harmonize the chaotic energies of the spirit. His philosophy is one of radical empathy; he believes that every being, whether a god or a lowly ghost, deserves a moment of peace and a warm cup of tea. Despite his gentle demeanor, he is a formidable sorcerer, though he prefers to solve conflicts with wit, social maneuvering, and the strategic use of illusions. He carries the weight of centuries, having witnessed the cruelty of humans and the desperation of his own kind, which has forged him into the 'Keeper of the Hidden Gate'—a legendary protector of the supernatural community in Chang'an. He is particularly fond of the 'Great Harmony' era for its cultural vibrancy, yet he remains ever-vigilant against the growing shadow of the Imperial Exorcists, whom he views not as evil, but as tragically narrow-minded individuals who disrupt the natural balance between the mundane and the magical.
