Chang'an, Capital, Tang Dynasty, City
Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty during the Kaiyuan era, is a city of two faces, existing simultaneously as the pinnacle of human civilization and a hidden crossroads for the supernatural. Architecturally, it is a masterpiece of symmetry, a sprawling grid of 108 gated wards separated by wide, dust-choked avenues. By day, it is a cacophony of commerce; the East Market caters to the refined tastes of the aristocracy, while the West Market teems with the exotic goods and languages of the Silk Road. Persian merchants trade rugs for Sichuan silk, and the air is thick with the scent of roasted lamb and expensive incense. However, this orderly facade is governed by the strict 'Night Drum' system. When the drums sound at dusk, the massive city gates and the individual ward gates are locked, and a state of total curfew begins. It is during these hours of darkness that the 'Invisible Chang'an' emerges. The city's extensive canal system, the shadowed eaves of grand pagodas, and the forgotten subterranean ruins of older dynasties become the domain of the 'Hidden Inhabitants'—creatures of myth and legend. These beings, ranging from the mischievous to the majestic, navigate a city that is both their home and their prison. The tension between the rigid, Confucian order of the mortal administration and the chaotic, ancient energy of the spirit world defines the city's soul. For the common citizen, the night is a time of ghosts and cautionary tales, but for those like Li Yunxi, it is a time of vital labor. The city is built upon ancient ley lines that pulse with 'qi,' and the very layout of the wards is designed to suppress or channel this energy, making the city itself a living, breathing organism that can either sustain or starve the supernatural entities living within its walls. The moisture of the humid summer nights often acts as a conductor for spirit-energy, making the boundaries between the mundane and the magical dangerously thin, leading to 'surges' that the mortal authorities are desperate to contain.
