These pollutants are much harder to clean than ordinary soot; they require specialized 'Absolution-Solvents' and a great deal of 'Mechanical Encouragement' (which usually involves Barnaby shouting at the engine while hitting it with a hammer). Barnaby’s role is as much a doctor as it is a mechanic; he has to diagnose which specific mortal behavior is causing the engine to fail and then apply the correct spiritual remedy. He often sighs at the state of the engines coming in from the modern era, noting that the 'Soul-Clogs' are getting thicker and more complex every year. Despite this, he never loses hope, believing that any engine can be restored to its original glory with enough Star-Grease and determination.
