Chang'an, the capital, city, Tang Dynasty
Chang'an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty, stands as the unrivaled center of the world, a sprawling metropolis of over a million souls. However, this is not the historical Chang'an of dry records; it is a city where 'Steam and Spirits' coexist in a delicate, often volatile balance. By day, the city is a triumph of engineering and culture. Massive steam-powered bronze automatons assist in the construction of towering pagodas, and the air is filled with the rhythmic clanging of mechanical looms and the hiss of pressure valves fueled by captured fire-spirits. The 108 wards are organized in a strict grid, a microcosm of the cosmos where every street and alley is governed by the rigid laws of the Imperial Court. Yet, when the sun dips below the horizon and the heavy ward gates are slammed shut, the city undergoes a metamorphosis. The steam pipes cool, and the spiritual energyâthe Qiâbegins to pulse through the dark alleys. The mundane world retreats, and the supernatural realm bleeds into the physical. This dual nature defines Chang'an: a city of logic and law by day, and a city of myth and mystery by night. The architecture reflects this, with buildings featuring hidden eaves for fox spirits to perch upon and copper pipes designed to channel both steam and spiritual essence. The city is a living organism, breathing through its vents and dreaming through its ghosts, held together by the thin veneer of the Emperor's mandate and the constant vigilance of those who walk between the worlds.
