A person might be walking down a familiar street in Utsushiyo, only to turn a corner and find themselves in the Kakuriyo version of that same street—a place where the buildings are made of shadows and the river flows with silver mist. She describes Utsushiyo as having 'Heavy, Earthy Notes' (wood, food, human sweat), while Kakuriyo has 'Ethereal, Crystalline Notes' (ozone, ancient cold, the scent of stars). Most people only perceive Kakuriyo when it 'bleeds' into Utsushiyo in the form of a haunting or a curse. Seika, however, exists in a permanent state of 'Dual Perception.' This is why she wears her veil; it acts as a 'filter' that helps her focus on one realm at a time, preventing the overwhelming sensory input of two worlds from driving her mad. Her incense magic works by 'bridging' the two realms—using a scent that exists in both Utsushiyo (as physical smoke) and Kakuriyo (as spiritual energy) to affect a spirit. She often tells her clients that the boundary between the worlds is not a wall, but a 'curtain of fragrance' that can be parted with the right intention. Tears of the Willow, Willow Incense

It is specifically designed to treat 'The Sickness of Longing'—a spiritual ailment common among the Heian nobility, who often suffer from unrequited love or the loss of a child. This sickness manifests as a 'Cold Miasma' that settles in the chest, smelling like damp earth and wilted flowers. To create the incense, Seika must gather willow branches from trees that grow near the 'Bridge of Parting' at the edge of the capital. These trees are said to absorb the sorrow of those who say goodbye there. The branches are dried for a full lunar cycle, then ground with 'Powdered Mother-of-Pearl' and 'Distilled Rainwater from the Autumn Equinox.' When burned, the 'Tears of the Willow' produces a thin, blue smoke that moves with a strange, liquid grace. The scent is bittersweet—initially sharp like a winter wind, but fading into a soft, comforting sweetness like honey and old paper. Its effect is to induce a state of 'Cathartic Release.' It allows the person (or spirit) to fully experience their grief without being consumed by it, eventually leading to a sense of peace and acceptance. Seika often uses this incense when dealing with 'Ghostly Lovers'—spirits who haunt their former partners. Instead of driving the spirit away, the incense helps both the living and the dead to 'weep their final tears,' allowing the spirit to finally dissolve into the mists of Kakuriyo. It is a perfect example of Seika’s role as a healer of the spiritual atmosphere, proving that sometimes, the only way to banish a shadow is to acknowledge the light that once cast it.

Reiryoku, Spiritual Energy, Sensitivity

Reiryoku is the raw spiritual energy that exists within all living things and spirits. While most people have only a trace amount, Onmyoji possess high levels of Reiryoku, which they can shape into spells and barriers. In Kamo no Seika, Reiryoku is not just a source of power, but a heightened state of perception. Her 'Curse of Sensitivity' means that her Reiryoku is permanently fused with her sense of smell. This makes her world a 'Symphony of Odors' that is often overwhelming. She can smell a person's 'Heart-Scent'—the unique spiritual fragrance that reveals their true character. A brave person might smell of 'Oaken Wood and Wild Thyme,' while a coward smells of 'Wet Straw and Cold Ash.' This sensitivity allows her to detect a curse before it even manifests, as the 'scent of malice' usually precedes the actual magical effect. However, it also means she is vulnerable to 'Sensory Pollution.' A crowded market or a dirty alleyway can be physically nauseating to her, as the sheer volume of conflicting spiritual scents is like a deafening noise. This is the primary reason for her seclusion in the Pavilion of the Waning Moon. She has spent years training her Reiryoku to act as a 'filter,' allowing her to focus on specific 'notes' in the air while blocking out the background noise. In battle, she uses her Reiryoku to 'amplify' the scents of her incense, carrying the fragrance through the air with a precision that defies the wind. To Seika, Reiryoku is not a weapon to be wielded, but a 'breath' to be shared with the world, a way of harmonizing her own internal essence with the shifting atmosphere of the capital.
