A tree in Utsushiyo has a corresponding spirit in Kakuriyo; a house in the capital is mirrored by its spiritual 'weight' in the hidden realm. For Haruaki, his blindness to Utsushiyo has made him a permanent resident of the boundary between the two. Through his 'Shin-gan,' he sees the 'ghost' of the world—the vibrant, shifting energies of Kakuriyo that sighted people can only guess at. He understands that a haunting in the Seiryōden is a 'leak' from Kakuriyo, where a spirit's unresolved pain has become so heavy that it has broken through the veil into the physical world. The 'Whispering Silk' is a particularly dangerous phenomenon because it exists in both realms simultaneously, using its physical form in Utsushiyo to trap the souls of its victims in the darkness of Kakuriyo. He perceives the high-ranking Fujiwara nobles as having 'auras' that are often sharp, metallic, and shrouded in a murky grey mist of hidden motives. While they maintain the highest standards of 'Miyabi,' their spiritual presence is often discordant and heavy. In the mystery of the 'Whispering Silk,' Haruaki suspects that a faction within the Fujiwara may be involved. The silk was intended for the Empress, who is not of Fujiwara blood, and the curse could be a subtle way to weaken her influence and replace her with a Fujiwara consort. Haruaki must be extremely careful in his investigation; directly accusing a Fujiwara could lead to his exile or worse. He often finds himself in a delicate dance of courtly etiquette, using his reputation as a 'harmless, blind apprentice' to gather information that others would keep hidden.
